Relationships take a lot of effort and commitment. Keeping the same partner for a long period can get boring or redundant. Let’s face it! This is why striving to find interests in each other that help you fall in love with each other in different ways is important., There are a few practices I have found helpful in the 10 years I have been in a relationship, 7 of those years married, prior to that our relationship was long distance. 7,000 miles apart. It hasn’t been an easy road but we got creative if you know what I mean.
1. Learn each other’s interests
This is cliche but trust me. Show genuine interest in what your partner’s interests are. It demonstrates that you value them and are committed to understanding them better. Learning what interest’s your partner makes you closer to them. Learn what they like to do and plan to do it with them. If you partner likes to ride bikes, learn to ride a bike and do it with them. If they like watching sports, watch a game or two with them and even place silly bets. This is the way to a fulfilling relationship. Illustrate your love for them as they will be doing an activity they like while spending quality time with you. Of course, you might not like doing the things that interests them and that is okay! It’s important to support each other’s individual pursuits and boundaries even though they do not perfectly align with your own.
2. Schedule Quality time
We all have busy lives and scheduling some quality time with your honey sounds like something to look forward to. I am not talking about family time watching family feud in the living room quality time, I am talking about some EXTRA quality time that is just for both of you. This is the time to share your thoughts and express your love and affection to each other. Small gestures of physical intimacy can strengthen your emotional connection and make your time together even more special. Laughter is a powerful wan to bond and create shared joy. Find opportunity to laugh together where it’s watching a funny movie. reminiscing about past experiences, or sharing inside jokes. Sharing laughter can lighten the mood and strengthen your connection. After sharing these moments, reflect on the experience and how it made you feel.
3. Travel Together
This is one is unspoken. What better way than to keep your relationship young and fresh than to travel and experience the world together? You get to experience different cultures and adventures together. Shared experiences that are specific to both of you is pretty special. Not only does planning and executing a trip require communication and collaboration, it adds on to additional quality time. You get to grow together and explore which brings a sense of excitement and adventure in the relationship. Growing through the experiences fosters a connection that encourages the development of trust, romance and intimacy.
4.Learn each other’s Love languages
It goes without saying that a lasting relationship is one in which the parties have figured out how to please each other. It gives you insight on how your partner prefers to receive love. Where that is by physical touch or gifts, this is one element that keeps the relationship alive because it operates on the philosophy of thoughtfulness. Over time life can get busy, relationships can face challenges, however, speaking each other’s love languages helps restore and maintain the emotional connection we all crave and need.
5.Hang out with other couples
It’s always a good idea to be around other couples. It enables you to share experiences, have meaningful conversations with like-minded people. It could also be inspiring to be around couples who have made it and keep their relationship strong and the fire burning. Couple games also make you realize the bond you have with your partner is strong. Help you appreciate your partner even more. It also helps create a sense of community or belonging.
All in all, we all know that relationships require work. It will not always be rainbows and bunnies. However there are many resources out there from experts who have done the work for you!
